Marcus Barnes is not currently eligible to represent Southampton in the Premier League, having not been named in their 25-man squad at the start of the season.
Southampton will have the chance to register the 22-year-old next month, however, meaning that he would be able to play a part in the second half of the 2018-19 campaign.
And the club’s supporters have been on social media debating whether the Englishman should be given the opportunity in the first team.
There are certainly mixed views on the situation, with many feeling that Barnes would have played already if he was good enough, whilst others believe that the forward should be given the chance to make his mark.
Barnes has been with Southampton since 2013, but has never played for the first team, and only scored once whilst on loan at League Two side Yeovil Town in the second half of last season.
The striker has 10 goals to his name for Southampton’s Under-23 outfit this season, however, and might well be coming of age following a slow start.
