Newcastle United are keeping an eye on midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek after Chelsea made him available for a loan move, according to The Telegraph.
What’s the word?
The Magpies have not exactly raced out of the blocks with regards to their transfer activity.
So far, manager Rafael Benitez has secured just the one signing and that is the permanent acquisition of Christian Atsu from Chelsea.
As far as The Telegraph is concerned, the Magpies could be eyeing another Blues player, but for a loan deal instead.
It is understood that the Premier League champions are willing to offload Loftus-Cheek on a temporary basis in order to gain more game time.
Newcastle are said to be interested, while fellow promoted Premier League side Brighton are also keeping tabs on him.
Is this a good move?
From the player’s point of view, it is a positive move as he needs more first-team football.
Last season, the midfielder made just 11 appearances in all competitions, and Chelsea are known for not giving many of their academy stars a lengthy spell in the first team.
Playing for a club who’s main aim is to retain their top-flight status could put the 21-year-old in an extra competitive environment, which would help his development.
For Newcastle, though, they need to make sure that they have experience within the squad.
In order to stay in the top flight this time around, they need a team that has the mental toughness, as well as ability, and while Loftus-Cheek could be a decent option in the middle of the park, he is also a risk.
