Jonjo Shelvey has returned to Newcastle training ahead of their massive clash with Southampton on Saturday, as reported by Chronicle Live.
The 2- year-old missed last weekend’s defeat at Liverpool with a knee injury, but has returned to training this week and could be in line for a return against Southampton.
The Magpies have a massive fee weeks coming up, with home games against Southampton and Huddersfield that could decide their Premier League fate.
Rafa Benitez’s side were comfortably beaten at Anfield in the absence of Shelvey. If the midfielder does return, Benitez will be hoping for a performance like the one against Manchester United, where Shelvey and Mo Diame completely outclassed United’s expensive midfield pairing.
It is not certain yet whether Shelvey will be fit to start, but if the injury has cleared up it seems safe to assume he will take Mikel Merino’s place in the starting line-up.
Merino has struggled for form since a good start to life on Tyneside, and the Shelvey-Diame pairing that worked so effectively against Manchester United would presumably be first choice again.
Newcastle have a three-week break after the match and then play Huddersfield Town, so the relegation picture could be a lot clearer by the end of the month.
Newcastle fans, would you throw Shelvey straight back into the line-up? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…
