In the 13th minute of the match, Valencia goalkeeper Jaume Domenech managed to fist a corner kick half-heartedly as the ball went as far as Kevin Vazquez who was standing inside the box. The right-back, in turn, headed the ball down towards De la Torre who, with a first-time heel-flick, found the back of the net.

Soon after the USMNT midfielder's opener, Celta Vigo won a penalty which was converted by Anastasios Douvikas. Valencia then reduced the margin in the 29th minute as Pepelu converted a spot-kick. However, Douvikas completed his brace in the 80th minute to seal a comprehensive 3-1 win for his team in the Copa del Rey round of 16.
